Belkin Router Problem

Hey, I've got an interesting problem, My router, periodically cuts off my Firefox or Internet Explorer while im using it, then won't let it come back until I restart the router. I always thought that the whole router was just shutting down until today I realized that I still had access to things like Hamachi, Digsby and even Sony Location free player, all working at full capacity (over the internet), yet my Web browsers still will not connect. Anybody have any ideas or help? I have a Belkin 54g Wireless router.

Do any other machines drop assuming there are others on the router?

Have you messed with any settings recently?

Is the firmware up to date?

Have you tried a different port?

Is it common enough to try plugging into your ISP modem for a few days to see if it doesn't happen?

I don't know why, but this thread makes me think he has a linksys. Then this is the same thing that linksys does.

I would check what KC said, also what you could do is hook the connection directly up to the pc and make sure that it is the router and not the connection itself.

It could also be your DNS going down. If you are connected to other internet services and DNS goes down, it won't make much difference as the DNS lookup is complete, but DNS lookups happen much more frequently with web browsing so you may not be able to access sites.

You can easily verify this by trying to go to an ip address directly eg: http://64.233.167.104/ if this opens up something (like google in this case) then you know it's a DNS problem

In which case consider switching to Open DNS or using one of the OpenDNS servers as a backup DNS when your primary one goes down.

Well, that IP address did open google so what do I do?

Also, I know this is the router, It did this before so I bought a new Wireless N router for my Massachusetts Place and on that the connection works fine, either wired or wireless.

So, is this a DNS problem?

I just checked it out and my router is set to Automatic DNS, do you know where I would get the DNS info to place it in manually?

Go to command prompt and type ipconfig /all. If you do not see it there, call your isp to get the info.

When I type that In a get a whole slew of numbers and connections, what connection and number am I looking for?

When you type ipconfig /all there is an entry for DNS Server - although it will more than likely point to your router. What is the server in your router set to - which should be a field like DNS1 or DNS2.

That is why I said about calling his isp, kc. Not all routers will show you the actual dns through ipconfig, and will point to 192.168.1.1 as the dns server.

Of course, going into the router setting will also tell you what the dns is.

Alright, I went into the router settings and found the DNS address, I entered it in, and I'm on the internet, so... lets see if it fixes the problem!
