ATI 9700pro VS 9800 nonpro

A friend of mine went out and got the 9800 no pro at best buy...in hope that he might actually get the samsung memory chips...he did so he flashed the bios of the card and is running his non pro as a 9800 pro. I'm soon to do the same...he has had some heat issues..but is waiting for his order of memory heatsinks to come in to help resolve that issue.

Could not find a 1 to 1 comparisonn of the 9800 vs 9700 PRO. But doing some number estimating it looks like a negligilble speed difference. The direct comparison numbers I could find showed the 9800 PRO is only 10-15% faster than the straight 9800.

the 9700pro should outperform the 9800 non-pro... ever so slightly... the difference will be minimal... the 9700pro has higher default clocks than the 9800 non-pro.. which explains the performance gap..

9700pro == 325/310 core/memory
9800 non-pro == 325/290 IIRC... I may be a little off on that..

Is the RADEON 9800SE 128MB the came as the non pro?

AFAIK... the SE is a slower edition card than the non-pro...

it is cheaper but quite powerful... I am not sure if ati is building it or only OEM's are offering it...

it is likely the product is sold with 128bit memory instead of 256.. or some other disabled features...

-edit-

found a link... :)

The 9800 SE only has 4 pixel pipelines to the 9800's 8. That hurts pretty bad on antialiasing and anisotropic filtering in games.

I can't figure out why there even is a 9800 SE. It seems to drop right into the 9600 PRO performance range. Marketing hype (aka sucker bait) to those who want that extra "200" in the name?

so would it better to just get the 9600 pro over 9800 se?

I would, assuming you don't want to mess with buying the 9500 PRO which is out of production.

I bought the 9500 PRO, there are still some around. Watch for pricing. The 9600 PRo will be cheaper than the 9500 PRO. Figure $170 vs $150 normally.

Also look at buying a 9700 ot 9700 PRO. Most of last years ATI cards can still be found.

Compusa has an Visiontek Xtasy 9600 PRO on sale for $109 after rebates. I'm not a big fan of Visiontek.

visiontek sells good bundles... is there something they have done wrong in the past ? other than being shafted by nvidia ?

:)

anyways... visiontek basically sells BBA cards... therefore the QA is right up there...

Also Hi EP and people. I found this place again while looking through a oooollllllldddd backup. I have filled over 10TB and was looking at my collection of antiques. Any bids on the 500Mhz Win 95 fix?
Any of the SP crew still out there?
