AOL Instant Messenger Problems

I am having some problems with using AOL screen names as normal instant messenging names. I used my original AOL screen name as a instant messenger screen name when I switch to broadband. But some other names from previous AOL members won't work for instant messenger. Does anyone know what the problem might be? I know you can use an AOL name after your AOL account as been canceled... Or vise versa... But there couple names won't seem to work for some reason, how do I solve this problem?

if its been registered on AIM, its registered until AIM goes out of business and destroys its service, unless it starts up a new feature that destroys old screen names after so much time of inactivity, or provide a self-delete function which would be nice.
