alternative software

hello all,
i'm gonna do a format - reinstall of Windows XP soon, but i dont like Norton software which i have been using, Norton Firewall, Norton Antivirus and Utilities.. what are better alternavtives to these? I have adsl so i need a decent firewall.
I need a better antivirus program that has updates of new virus definitions but im not sure which to use?

i prefer software that doesnt interegate itself so much into the XP and doesnt run in the background or anything annoying.

any recomendations?

are the freeware versions of these any good? i do i need to do some 'searching'

They are excellent programs. As good as any you pay $$$$$ for.

AVG Antivirus (Free) + Kerio Personal Firewall (Free)

avg has at times been proven to be better then the big ones, at times, not as good...always close.

it's smaller, less cumbersome on your pc...I don't see any reason at all to pay for av, with avg available.

tiny firewall is smaller then za, also less cumbersome, I had lots of probs with za, no probs with tiny.

tiny is harder to figure out, but much worth the effort
