I was sadden at this news;

"Steven Bink, who ran the windowsxp.nu site, says that he has transferred his domain name over to Microsoft. We reported late last year that he had been asked by Dutch lawyers representing the Vole to hand over the windowsxp.nu domain.

A notice on his new site, which can be found now at http://winxp.bink.nu/, says that he reached an agreement with Microsoft last Friday.

He further says that Microsoft only wanted the domain name, and will provide support for his new site."

What is this? now we can't choose out own domain name? This makes me very :mad: at microsoft. What do you guys all think? is this really fair?

Hate Microsoft? Read this, this is UNFAIR!

What is the internet coming to? Where the big companies can just wipe right over the small guys? This will make Mr. Bink's website stats drop dramically. All because "Microsoft" doesn't like someone using their name in a domain. Whats all your opinon's on this? Voice you opinon, don't by shy.

One post about this is enough. Threads are merged.

First of all let me say I am a frequent visitor to Bink's site, and to his forum on msn. I am also a Seattle resident and come in frequent contact with "Microsoft is God" thinking, and am no big supporter of MS. It is however, a commercial enterprise, and has some rights and responsibilities regarding protection of their good name, and some real concern with maintaining control of what goes out in their name. The most succint way I can put the MS point of view on this is the old "what if it was a porn site" argument. Should MS have the right to maintain control of their trademark names? I say of course they should. While I have not been following the "say goodbye to windowsxp.nu" thread over at the forum (it got a little too soap opera-ish for me), my general feeling is that MS did what they had to do, and did it in a way that showed concern for the good that Bink has provided xp users. As for the "his site won't get as many hits" argument, I'm sure hits would be up here if we changed the name from NTFS to Yahoo, too.

Question is, how well was he compensated for the domain name???

Besides the help for his new site...

the question also is what if he hadnt gotten all the support he did ...would MS have done as much or just said "give me" "give me"

Hmmm ... all I can say is that Microsoft owns the name WindowsXP, and they should be given exclusive rights to any domain with windowsxp in it.

Cheers!

There was a similar scenario in Liverpool, UK where a guy and his son bought http://www.liverpoolairportcarparking.co.uk (or something like that). A Liverpool Airport spokesperson said that the term "Liverpool Airport" is a trademark name of the airport and therefore cannot be used without exclusive rights from the company. The old guy and his son were due to be taken to court, but agreed an out of court settlement.

At the end of the day, I think the companies who sell the domain names shouldnt be allowed to sell domains which are under copyright by another company (i.e. the windowsxp.nu - Microsoft have their trademark on Windows XP)

So, Microsoft should have taken their arguement out with the domain seller, and then bought the domain from Bink and agreed help with the newer site - that woulda been the best case scenario.

So, you can have any domain you wish, but if you think your domain name is breaking copyright, then choose something different, or contact the existing company and ask them if you can use their name - explain the site's purpose - they might be kind and say "sure"... some might say yeah on condition you post adverts for them etc... but make sure you get their allowance in writing so they got no comebacks :p

ya ya, like usal all you guys are right. anything with windows xp or so on should belong to microsoft, before you know it everything will be trademarked, and we will run outta domains.
