Am I right in thinking that these two programs do different types of cleaning, and that both should be installed?

There functions do overlap abit you will be fine with one or the other or both if you so wish.

Features for SpyBot:

Features for AAW:

http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/

Try them both, ive never used SpyBot myself but have heard good things.

It seems more far reaching than AAW in terms of features (does keyloggers and trojans for one) but the basic function is the same. I think however AAW's database is far more complete.

Many thanks. I have that many cleaners installed on my computer that I have given them their own folder on my start menu. Sometimes though, I feel I am too paranoid. I do wonder if cleaning the computer too much might cause more problems than it solves.

your concern is valid...too much cleaning is more harmfull then helpfull

for instance, registry cleaners will usually recognize as invalid some entries that you will miss in the future, and you won't even recognize the problem when it arises

spybot can easily remove some very functiional history logs...history, address completion, stuff that I use every day

adaware will rmove some keys on programs and render them invalid, where you might have prefered to keep using the program...like dap, or eudora...though eudora is no longer a target, it will be again soon

i used ad aware and it didn't install right because of spyware preventing it. i deleted the spyware it found and i could no longer connect to the dail up service. i had to use the restore CD's. the spyware slowed my PC down bad.

Also Hi EP and people. I found this place again while looking through a oooollllllldddd backup. I have filled over 10TB and was looking at my collection of antiques. Any bids on the 500Mhz Win 95 fix?
Any of the SP crew still out there?
