Ack, XP wont restart or shutdown

Can anyone help here? no matter what i do, xp refuses to soft restart or shutdown, i have to hit the reset button or turn it off. only been happening a couple of days, i cant work out why and its driving me MAD!

Open a command window and type in 'sfc /scannow.' This will check for any damaged system files. Other then that I'm not sure what to suggest besides a repair or clean installation.

funnily enough i thought of that straight after posting this, and by a miracle it worked! Thanks for the reply anyway
