I decided to do chkdsk /f to do a disk check of my hard drive on my laptop. When I restarted, it didn't do it. Is there a way to access it outside the Windows XP system like, using the startup menu for choosing the regular or safe mode options?

Thanks

If you go to a CMD prompt and type in "chkdsk /f" for your C drive, you will get a message saying the drive is locked and it should occur at next reboot.

Is that what you did? If it didn't run, check your Event Viewer for any errors.

you can also boot of the xp install disk and press R for recovery console, and use chkdsk that way. Might actually be better doing it that way as it saves a bunch of reboots if you need multiple chkdsk passes to fix stuff.

That is what I did. Where is the event viewer so I can check it?

you could also use the recovery console and do chkdsk /r

The original OP just wants to use the f switch (check drive and fix errors) and the equivalent of that in the recovery console is p not r.

chkdsk /p

/p : Does an exhaustive check of the drive and corrects any errors
/r : Locates bad sectors and recovers readable information

Ok I got it! Thanks. Man my drive is working better now that I got through that. Still couldn't find inside the Event editor anything about why chkdsk wouldn't run.

Also Hi EP and people. I found this place again while looking through a oooollllllldddd backup. I have filled over 10TB and was looking at my collection of antiques. Any bids on the 500Mhz Win 95 fix?
Any of the SP crew still out there?
