Private: First VC for 23 years

THE nation gained a new hero yesterday when Private Johnson Beharry was awarded the first Victoria Cross for a generation.

The 25-year-old soldier won the ultimate military honour for saving the lives of more than 30 comrades in Iraq.

In two separate battles he displayed unbelievable coolness and heroism despite appalling wounds.

As news of the award was announced tributes poured in to Pte Beharry — headed by Army boss General Sir Mike Jackson.
