A Problem no one can solve

I recently upgraded from windows 98 2nd edition to windows xp professional and this is my second day of using xp. The first day i used xp my cd-rom and cd-rw drives worked fine. Now neither of them work. The drives are the sony cd-rw crx140e and the BTC 48x IDE CD-ROM Drive. I am getting this error: Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)
does anyone know how to fix this problem or have a download link for the drivers necessary to fix the problem. System restore is a last resort since i've installed/downloaded a ton of things today and yesterday. One question i had about system restore is that if i backup all the files/downloads that i want to keep and do a system restore will those files still be there after the restore? thanks

A system restore is not going to delete any of the files that you downloaded.

Rather than do a system restore you would be much better off backing up your data files, boot to the XP CD, reformat the hard drive, and do a clean install of XP. I know you will not want to do this but in the long run it will prevent alot of problems and you will be much happier with XP.

BTW, when you do a clean install of XP do all of the Windows updates and install any updated drivers you want to install before you start installing applications.

Try going to the device manager and uninstalling the devices then rebooting and let windows install the drivers again. also you might try downloading the latest aspi layers from this site

I have had an error with my cd-rom before and i think it was b/c downloaded a game.....Motorcross Madness

can u partion your hd, place all your files on another partition? So when you do a clean install of XP and it asks which partition, choose c while your files are on d. And PLEASE use NTFS(as in NOT FAT32) ...XP will love you for it.. :D

Also Hi EP and people. I found this place again while looking through a oooollllllldddd backup. I have filled over 10TB and was looking at my collection of antiques. Any bids on the 500Mhz Win 95 fix?
Any of the SP crew still out there?
