well i saw the thread about the ms merchandise, and when i went to the site i saw that it had user id/ or alumni, i thought alumni was only for graduating, hmm so i did a search on dictionary.com to see and look what the result said.

http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=alumni

i think its pretty sexist don't you, i mean if its not whats the term for a woman then?

ok i read the paragraph at the bottom but thats stupid

The word isn't really sexist as there is a version of it for both genders(kinda like with host/hostess, steward/stewardess, actor/actress, etc). The problem is that most ppl have gotten lax in the proper use of the word and use it for both genders.

A lot of English is derived from Latin (as well as some other languages). It wasn't someone comming in and saying "lets make a word for men only". It's rather that they borrowed the word from Latin, and preserved the (conjugate, or whatever the different forms of the words were again...it has been well over a decade since I took any Latin).

That's really all that's going on here...

it's an old word...
not surprised that it means what it does

Just like peacock only refers to the male :D

Well duuuuh... one comes out of the other. And I do believe that is a male thing. :p

*runs*

Right.

It wouldn't do running around saying "I sawr a peac***" now would it.

But it is true that alot of what I call "accurate" words have been dropped as it is easier to use alot of simplistic terms to describe something instead of a "accurate" few.

Right...

So the thing is not in a square or otherwise edged shape, and has a discernable color that pertaines to its name, also having it's seeds on the inside and a covering to protect it's flesh. This covering has the same exterior color as the objects valued part, althought the covering is used in teas and cooking sometimes. The covering also has the oils that protect it from many predators as they are quite pungent bot in taste and odor and cause a numbness of the skin in quantity. You might even call it's shape spherical.

Anyway off to work.

was he talking balls? :p

Actually the maning of words changes as time goes by. Using antiquated meanings is pointless.

My favorite example is the expression "cute little bugger". It has fallen out of common usage today. It was commonly used to describe an attractive male child 50 years ago. 200 years ago it was used to describe a ships cabin boy who was particularly sought after for **** sex during those long boring cruises...
