A layout of everything for desktop...

Well I just got an idea. Everyone wants to soup up their desktop and we are all scrambling everywhere to find what to download and what to hack and so on. Could someone with a gnarly desktop (you know who you are) give a smooth layout of what programs we should download and the best sites for icons, skins, themes, etc. and whatever else you can think of to those of us with not so gnarly desktops. I am very busy and it would save me loads of time I should be spending on homework. Your help would be much appreciated!!
