A few External DVD Burner questions

I am thinking about buying an external dvd burner (brand still undecided and still reading info) and wish to know in your experience which way to hook it up is better through Firewire or USB2 as i have both on my Shuttle SS51G....and also if you can still get a 4x burn ( enough data output ) on the external drive using either of the above 2 options....and finally is there any kind of performance hit on your pc when using or burning with an external drive.

though usb2.0 offers a higher theoretical bandwidth than firewire (480mbps vs 400), firewire has been proven to be faster due to the lower overhead needed to transfer data. also it requires quite a bit less cpu power than usb2.0.
