well I've been looking for a new video card for quite some time now and I've found a couple good ones and I was wondering if someone could give me some advice on wich one to buy if either ... My intentions with this video card is gaming .. Playing games like ES IV Oblivion and COD2 etc..... on med. to high settings!! I have a Gateway 706ge with 1.49 GIGS of RAM a 3.0GHZ processor and a :dead:305:dead: Watt power supply but im planning on upgrading that along with the card..... i have about $160.00 to work with...

So should I get http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?item=N82E16814150130 <<< This card with . http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?item=N82E16817170010 <<< this power supply.. or .. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814130261 <<< This card with no power supply upgrade ( i could still upgrade idk if i would need to though)... or any other suggestions would be great My graphics slots are 3 Regular PCI .. 1 PCI E x1 .. 1 PCI e x16 >> heres my specifications + a 1 gig stick of RAM >> http://support.gateway.com/s/PC/R/3726/4546sp3.shtml << and for any help that I'm given thanks in advance!!!

i reaaaaaallllllllllllyyyyyy need suggestions im kinda noob :lick:

Working on it, I'll be back in a minute.

While I'm digging, post your power supply current ratings for:
+12V and +5V. It's on the label inside the PC.
Also did you mean 350W? Your post says 305W.

Update:
Ok, for what you want to spend the 6800 GT is as good as it gets.

The 7600 GS is the same price but a little slower due to a 128 BIT memory interface, on the other hand it supports openGL 2.0 the 6800 XT has a 256 BIT memory interface but only supports the older openGL 1.5. The openGL 1.5 may cause you problems with video quality now and compatibility in the future.

I'd recommend saving a little while longer and going for the 7600 GT at $170. It is still choked by a 128 BIT memory interface but uses fast RAM and has a much faster fill rate.

Never trust a $19 power supply. When you post your present power supply current ratings I can tell you if it is adequate for the video upgrade. It may support the 6800 XT.

Update II:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814150153 $137.
A 6800 XT from XFX that has 256 BIT memory, faster fill rates and supports openGL 2.0 The evga cards must be using an older chipset.

There are some MSI and XFX 7600 GT cards for $140-150 after rebate but I don't recommend rebates when dealing mail order. Too many problems, like no return if the UPC is missing from the box.

If that XFX 6800 GT really is openGL 2.0 (call and ask newegg to guarantee that) it is the best deal. And if we can get by with the old Power supply you're in budget.

PS Your not that noob. You picked the best vid card for your price range out of 860 choices. The power supply picking needs work but OSNN will help with that.

The coolermaster isn't too bad, especially with that rebate.

Generally I only recommend power supplies with dual +12V rails these days for upward compatibility with the higher end video cards and faster processors. But that will be putting you in the $60 and up range for a power supply.

The under $60 power supplies don't meet the latest ATX power supply standards (ATX 12V 2.0 or 2.01) which is why they are so cheap. They have lots of watts but it's all on the wrong voltage outputs (3.3 and 5 vs +12 which is what the new processors and video cards need).

For $24 after rebate the coolermaster is a good deal. If you decide on a higher speed vid card than the 6800 XT or the 7600 GT you will need to move up to a 60-80 power supply. Which is why the video upgrades cost so much from the computer companies. You are getting a video card and a much better power supply.

Right now you have a good basic computer. Plenty of ram, HD, fast CPU, PCI-e video card slot. It should meet your gaming needs for 2-3 years which is typically 3 generations of video cards. So if you need to upgrade video cards again for future games the added power supply expense right now is worth it, go for an ATX 12v 2.0 power supply.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817103928 at $65 this would give you growth potential through the life of your computer including a high end video card and dual core cpu upgrade.

awesome will do thx again uve been a tremendous un beleivable help !!!

Also Hi EP and people. I found this place again while looking through a oooollllllldddd backup. I have filled over 10TB and was looking at my collection of antiques. Any bids on the 500Mhz Win 95 fix?
Any of the SP crew still out there?
