6 minutes to Boot XP Pro

It takes my computer 6 minutes to boot up! How can I do a controlled boot to see what is being loaded?

Is this a fresh install?

Man that's slow!

Probably a good little program iceman is telling you to use!

Should tell you what is slowing it up!

Run msconfig and do a selective startup. Then add items back one at a time until you find the culprit.

Also, if you are not on a network you can disable the workstation service.

Last, you should download and run BootVis.

try running your TaskManager or RegCleaner if you have it. See what programs are loading on startup. There are some tweaks you can do in your TaskManager that will start up your XP Pro alot quicker. I'm also running XP Pro and I'm on in about 60 seconds running an intel celeron 500 (stop laughing, it hurts my feelings.) I actually can run MS2k2 and RTCW with my Voodoo 5 no problem)

When was the last time you scandisk and defrag? If you've been doing that you can use the xp repair console. Go into you bios and set it to boot from cdrom; put in your xp cd, select the repair option/recovery console to get there.

do you boot with dual os's? you can use tweakui for xp to set the time between os selection shorter

it could also be your hard drive. when my HD began to fail it took around 15 minutes to boot :)

it was filthy. but a replacement hd straightened that out nicely.

I had the very same problem on my 1800+ system. I tried deleting my profile, running Bootvis, defragging, scandisk, repairing (which helped a little, but it was still VERY slow), everything! My final fix was a reload. Everything is fine now. If anyone has any insight on this, I would love to know why it happens and a better way to fix it.

check the jumper settings on your hard drive.
I had a similar problem when I removed a second drive and forgot to reset my jumper from Master to Cable select.

If it takes a lot of time to login at startup, you should get this small utility from www.sysinternals.com ... its called CONTIG and its a command line defragmenter.
Open command prompt, navigate to C:\Documents and Settings\[USERNAME] where [USERNAME] corresponds to your login name. Then run contig on ntuser.*
That should speed up login time considerably.

Good luck! :)

FoSsiL: Nice Sig. Are you a member of the RX-7 forum?

This sounds more like a driver conflict with your network card. Try reinstalling the NIC drivers.

I just reread the topic. Do you have a network card installed?

Also Hi EP and people. I found this place again while looking through a oooollllllldddd backup. I have filled over 10TB and was looking at my collection of antiques. Any bids on the 500Mhz Win 95 fix?
Any of the SP crew still out there?
