3rd Party chkdsk/scandisk for XP

Can anyone point me to a third party chkdsk or scandisk type of software for Windows XP? I have a drive that stores data fine, but it can't be fully formatted, and must be quick formatted. I also can't boot from it. Any OS installed on it will install fine, but refuse to boot with no error messages. I'm guessing theres a problem at the beginning of the drive ... but chkdsk also chokes and hangs while checking the drive.

PM checks the disk without modifying data? Unless to fix errors of course...
