My friend is having a problem. He can't get signal from his router to his room for a laptop. Is it possible to add the 2nd wireless router to be an "access point" in a way so it can boost/relay the signal for him?

any free websites? :)

It is free, the sign up to see solution is bull. Just scroll down alot.

Basically what u need to do is this: (from the site)

Each AP needs a different unique ip,
Adjacent APs should use a different channel,
All AP need to use the same SSID,
All AP need to use the same WEP encryption keys,
All APs need to use the same authentication method.

What they didn't mention was that you have to run a cable to the second wireless router which you place closer to the laptop.

Option B is go google "windsurfer antenna". And make a directional signal booster for 40 cents.

Option B1. If you can't make the router directional with the windsurfer because of screwing other users in the house use a second wireless router as an access point placed next to the original router and put a windsurfer on the access point to boost signal to the bedroom.

Option C is spend $$$ bucks for a repeater which will pick up the wireless router signal and retransmit it. About 4x the dollars that I can get a second router for.

Option D talk the neighbor on the same side as the bedroom into installing wireless then bootleg off of them.

Option E try changing the frequency the existing router uses. A long shot but a different frequency might have less interference and more range.

yeah - I guess repeaters vary.... I saw some in PC-World today and whilst expensive they MIGHT represent value to someone who was not cost conscious.

Speaking of which I got lucky and picked up a "pre-owned" LinkSys Broadband Router for about £48 (that's £12 mark down) and am planning to replace my 80211.b with this to upgrade to 80211.g.... then as phase B am planning to place the old WAP towards the back end of the house to (hopefully) get garden coverage for the summer :D :)

Ouch. Netgear wireless router is running ~$20 USD since September (though Linksys seems to have better range IMHO). They're practically offering money to people to buy Airlink wireless around here.

Is that the 802.11g stuff though? It's pretty much similar here with the 80211.b...

Also Hi EP and people. I found this place again while looking through a oooollllllldddd backup. I have filled over 10TB and was looking at my collection of antiques. Any bids on the 500Mhz Win 95 fix?
Any of the SP crew still out there?
