180 sues Zone Labs

Would be interesting to know if anyone has ever gone to the 180 website and just downloaded their software because they thought it would be useful.

If it is something that only ever comes bundled with something and doesn't actually have any benefits then surely thats just spyware (or even a parasite by definition) - and spreading the good word of new products thru adverts hardly counts.

Do any of their products actually do anything?

literally LOL

Well that URL is blocked by BT's military internet gateway. Doesn't that just speak volumes?

yeah i was just about to post that about the no spyware logos, many sites that have spyware have them, isnt this somehow illegal?

Maybe it isn't spyware, technically some of this garbage is just adware.
In their eyes it's totally different but to most of us it's all pretty much a pain in the arse and very intrusive & annoying.

Hence the lawsuit ;)

They are a marketing company, looks somewhat legit:

Funny thing is, in the bottom left corner of their page they have one of those "no spyware" logos :p

'Legit' would apply in a very, very liberal fashion here. They broke off relations with Montreal based IST (Integrated Search Technologies) in September to try and clean their rep up... IST was behind many of the backdoor installations of evil, bloating s7|tware. I sent them numerous nasty emails (knowing I'd get no response) Took awhile, but eventually figured out which zones to lock down and prevented future installations on my client's machines.

180 solutions will be known for shady installs of adware, spyware, and in some cases bloatware forever in my books. Never to be trusted.

Thanks to Hijack This - already infected machines are cleaned relatively easily.

They're not going to get any sympathy from any jury in a big suit.

I hate spyware companies ... the ones who claim they are clean are the worse ..

Enlighten me. What Spyware has MS got runnin.

Is it Firefox?

You really are an extreme fanboy aren't you?

Tell me why does Windows Explorer try to connect to the internet when I open My Computer?

Could be one of many things, most of them were addressed in this thread:

Covers most of the ways explorer.exe connects to the internet and why. It basically behaves as a browser. Like Firefox.

Following your flawed logic, Firefox is spyware. :)

Time for some Downtime

I know there is no seperation between Windows and Internet explorer, you don't see a problem with this. Lets follow my "flawed" logic, Internet Explorer is tied into Windows Explorer which is tied into the kernel, sure seems like a good idea to me.

So can i replace explorer.exe with FireFox then since it does the same thing? That would be following your flawed logic.

Also, why would explorer.exe need to connect to the internet at all when it is not my browser? I know that if i pop open Finder in Mac OS X nothing will connect to the internet. What if I open Nautilas in Gnome? Same thing, no Internet.

There is no valid reason for explorer.exe to have to connect to the internet.
