I believe your hissing problem stems from an audio driver incompatability, try updating them, on saying that when a similar thing happened to me it was after a driver update for my then NV based board. So same principle, but fixed with a roll back instead.

Why not do an upgrade install of windowsXP over your existing installation? This should keep all your programs etc intact, this is dependant on the type of xp disk you own as to whether you get this option or not of course. If it's available, the only hassle you'll have is having to reinstall...

Have you checked that all the jumpers are in place ie. not inside the hoover? Also make sure that the cmos battery hasn't been disloged, nor the bios chip itself as this is quite often simply pushed into place.
