replacing a Windows 7 laptop HD

I'm thinking of buying a Win7 laptop. What I'd like to do after receiving it is swap out the 500 GB conventional disk and replace it with a SSD instead, if possible. (The laptop I'm looking at doesn't offer SSD pre-installed.) I'm thinking this will be a 2-step job, 1) shrink the Win7 partition...

    c:\windows\fonts

Is there any way to relocate this to preferably another partition? 350 MB is getting rather bloated for my Windows partition :p

Vanishing network shares on removable media

If I share a folder on a removable (firewire) drive, then disconnect the device, when I plug it back in, I find the share has vanished and I have to recreate it. This only happens on my laptop, which is running WinXP SP1. I don't have this problem on my PC that's running WinXP Gold - the shares...

Error 765: Internet Connection Sharing cannot be enabled.

However, none of my present installed adapters are configured to use 192.168.0.1 presently, but I still get this message when I attempt to share the ADSL connection with one of the network cards. I do know a previous connection had that IP assigned before I deleted it (a network bridge to be...

    connecting/disconnecting network drives

Is there an easy way to disconnect and reconnect network drives to different share points through the command line? I'm thinking of writing a batch file which I can run, so I can mass change where my drive letters point to quickly when I need different resources from different IPs on my network...

    hibernation/power saving modes

How do I see which application currently running is the one blocking my PC from entering power saving modes (e.g. turning the monitor off, standby etc.) or from hibernating?

    Recovery Console

Not sure which forum this will fit in best, but I think this is fine. Basically I have a laptop with WinXP Pro SP1, but no WinXP CD - (re)installation takes place off a hidden partition. Would it be possible for me to create a bootable CD to boot into the recovery console, in the event I...

    Documents and Settings

How would I go about moving this off C:\ and sticking it on another partition with more free space? It would make backing up easier for me too. What about other special folders like %APPDATA% that TweakUI doesn't seem to offer to let you move?

    > 32 Gb Fat32

How would one enable WinXP to create FAT32 partitions larger than 32 GB instead of being restricted to only using and not creating them? Edit: Oh yeah, I'm aware of performance/efficiency issues with drives this large due to cluster sizes, so no need to tell me about that :)

    Disable pending reboots

How would I disable a pending reboot (and possibly manually perform any pending file/registry operations, if any) without actually rebooting? Is there someplace in the registry I need to be looking? I want to run an installer, but can't reboot the machine at the moment, but the installer won't...

    Fonts Folder

Is it possible to relocate the Fonts folder? I'd like to share one common folder between multiple Windows installations (and also make recovering all my fonts on a full OS reinstall easier), and not have duplicate copies of these fonts in several places. Thanks :p

    Hibernation

Anther quick question while I'm here and unable to find in search easily :) Is it possible to relocate where the hibernation file is stored? Unfortunately I do not have 1 GB to spare on my boot/system partition. Thanks.

    Temporary print file

Is it possible to move wherever WinXP writes temporary print jobs off of the system drive onto another drive? Printing colour A3 sheets at 600dpi generates jobs almost 200 MB at times for me, so I would prefer it if I could move the temporary print files to a larger disk, especially when with...

    mapping drive letters to folders

How would I make WinXP map a drive letter to a specific directory and keep it across reboots? Specifically, I want to map R: to E:\test - I can do it using the subst command at the prompt, but would like a more permanent method, if there is one. E: is a FAT32 drive, if that helps. Cheers.

    null output

How do I redirect command line output of programs from standard output/standard error output to I guess the equivalent of /dev/null in a command prompt under XP/2K? I've tried stuff like "command > NULL 2> NULL2" but they just give me files with such names as if I redirected to a file. Thanks.

    Moving temporary Internet files folder

IE6 seems to refuse to let me move this folder - when I go into the setting to try to do this, it has a blank line where the current location should be, and Amount of Disk Space is set to 0 MB, regardless of where I drag the slider. Trying to move the folder gives me an error about not enough...

    Taskbar buttons

How would I make it so Windows never forces them onto two lines when I have like 30 or so windows open? I'd prefer them all on one line without the scroll thing, even it it means only half an icon visible for each one (which is enough for me anyway).

    Ending Processes Remotely

Is there any way for me to end any process I want on another PC on the network from my own? I can't seem to find the equivalent of remote Task Manager. Preferably without using Remote Desktop Connection. Thanks.

Sorted files in Explorer (not what you think)

Right, when you sort files in Explorer, the column that the list is sorted by (in detailed view) is grey. How would you change or disable this colour, because if you change the background colour, for example, the grey then becomes extremely noticable. That arrow at the top should be enough...

    Too much RAM for WinXP?

Is it possible to give WinXP too much RAM so it becomes unstable? I tried to give it 1.5 GB (all sticks brand new), and I keep getting blue stop screens, usually stop codes 8E or 0A, but somtimes other, after only a few minutes of uptime. I've taken one stick out now and currently have 1 GB...
