Try letting the router provide the ip addresses to both machines. In other words, set the ip configuration (win2k and xp) to auto. The router should provide a unique ip address for each machine. Also make sure the default gateway is the same ip as your router e.g.,(192.168.1.1) if set manually...

What is the error message that you recieve?
Is it always the same error message?
If this is just a one time or not regularly occurring error, it is probably just
a memory or java error from using chat.
Sounds like your pop and smtp settings may not be correct. Double check those in Outlook. Also turn off any firewall/anti-virus software that may be running, this may be blocking the outgoing Outlook connection. If all settings seem to be correct, then I would backup and un-install/re-install...
