Default decoding AD groups

Is there a way to figure out what a group does in AD? I'll clarify... I look at my profile and in the member of tab there are 15 things. Some are Windows things (Enterprise Admin, Domain Admin etc) and some are custom groups. These have been added by various admins or techs for years and years. However none of those people work here anymore and they left no documentation. I'm trying to figure out what does what and why its there.
