Default Do you need Server 2008 to manage Windows 7

Simple question, but I can't seem to google the answer. At least not an answer everyone can agree on. I know I can add this new Win7 machine to the Server 2003 AD, I know I can assign existing GPO's to it. But I can't seem to get drive mapping to work. In AD, under the profile tab, there is a section to declare a batch file. We have one in there, the bat file contains a few important network directories out students need. This part works fine. Below that there is the section to map a home folder. We have it map an H Drive and then in turn redirect My Documents to that network share. This works just fine in XP and below. In Win7 it either doesn't work at all, or errors out so quickly I can't actually see what the problem is. Any ideas?
