Microsoft, for obvious reasons, has updated the Genuine Windows Validation.

The new version is 1.4.389.0 (456KB) and it works completely different than previous versions. You have to download the EXE file (GenuineCheck.exe) in Step 1 and then run it. The EXE returns a validation code that you have to provide the Microsoft web site (Step 2).

I guess this means I won't be able to slipstream LegitCheckControl.dll any longer (it's worth noting, however, that both files are the same version).

If this stops me from having to call MS to tell them this is the 7000th time I have installed this OS on the same PC, then Im all for it...

THey always give me a ration of CRAP...

This causes lots of complications with people. It creats hassels for installing everything. Takes more time too, but I guess It's for the best.

No kidding.

I totally agree with that.

But you can bypass that by validating without calling :)

Just click the links on the computer and blam, there you go.

I haven;t had to call em the last 4 formats

Speaking of activation, you shouldn't have to call if it's the same configuration. If you change some thing drastic (such as your motherboard) then you might have to call.

However, this has nothing to do with activation. It is only for downloading certain items from the Microsoft web site.

Yea, you would think that would be true... on two occasions now, I only changed my Video card... and was forced to contact those MS ba$tards...

Anyway, I just find it annoying and unwaranted... they should make it by MAC address... I guess you could spoof it, but damn at least all the people with no real PC knowledge would be able to use a prated copy...

A video card is a drastic change. Microsoft compiles the information based on certain hardware and configurations.

Are you sure this is new?

Reason I ask is running GenuineCheck.exe has been a way to get around WGA.

Google GenuineCheck.exe and you will see what I mean.

I've never had to use it before. Yesterday I got around it by using the ActiveX control. Today it forced me to download this program and enter the code in step 2.

Yeah I don't think that is new either, I remember using it months ago. When it first came out, the second step for the code wasn't required, until they found a work around, then they implemented "step 2", which I think still has an exploit....

Also Hi EP and people. I found this place again while looking through a oooollllllldddd backup. I have filled over 10TB and was looking at my collection of antiques. Any bids on the 500Mhz Win 95 fix?
Any of the SP crew still out there?
