Default Windows XP x64 free upgrade available NOW!

Windows XP x64 free upgrade available NOW!

Upgrade to Windows XP Professional x64 Edition from Windows XP Professional (32-bit)

Join the Windows XP Professional x64 Edition Technology Advancement Program

Published: April 25, 2005

Already have an x64 PC?

Exchange Windows XP Professional (32-bit) for Windows XP Professional x64 Edition

Note: The Technology Advancement Program will be available for customers using our localized Japanese products in May 2005.

Purchasing technology can be frustrating—the minute you buy something, the new version becomes available. We understand this frustration and have created a program in cooperation with our partners to help alleviate it.

The Windows XP Professional x64 Edition Technology Advancement Program enables customers who have purchased Windows XP Professional (32-bit) to exchange it for Windows XP Professional x64 Edition. You will need to have an x64 processor (the AMD Athlon 64, AMD Opteron, Intel Pentium 4 with EM64T, or Intel Xeon with EM64T) to run the new software.

Note: Orders for the Technology Advancement Program must be placed by July 31, 2005.

oh, they have the trial version back online, but it's only 120 days.... is this the same as the one they had for 365 days?

EDIT:
Terms of Use
  • By participating in this program, your 32-bit version of Windows® XP Professional will no longer be licensed.
  • For the purposes of the End User License Agreement for your existing Windows® XP Pro (32 Bit) software, your installation of this software will be an “Upgrade.”
bahhh.. means I can't keep using my 32-bit OS if I download it.

At first glance, it doesn't look like this will help people with retail copies of WindowsXP Pro, it only looks like it is for people who bought say, a retail system with a 64bit processor and want to invalidate their support.

I like the system tho, I just hope it doesn't get exploited.
However, would you prefer either, or:
- A download and serial instantly
- A retail copy that would take a month

I still don't know how they are going to do it either way and have asked MS mutliple times, perhaps they don't even know.

The copy NetRyder got last night was a retail copy in a DVD case.

With Microsoft there is always a catch.

Hope some users get a free upgrade, I did read it and it's how shall I say gobbledee gook and contradictory!

I was talking about invalidating the license of my 32-bit OS if I downloaded the 64-bit "upgrade" according to their terms of use.

By participating in this program, your 32-bit version of Windows® XP Professional will no longer be licensed.

The installation of Windows® XP Professional x64 Edition requires you to format your hard drive. You must back up your files and settings prior to the installation or they will be erased. Microsoft is not liable for any loss of data as a result of this installation.
I bet some people will want it anyway even though they don't have 64 bit and will lose their 32 bit licence.

Yep, I want to download it before MS ends the free upgrade in July. But not sure what to do now.

Yeah losing your 32-bit license when you upgrade is enough to make a few people double think things. What if you upgrade and you can't find 64-bit drivers for your hardware or you can't use software you need to? You can't go back, your stuck.

Also by invalidating your license do you think it sends info to MS like your key and it is then blocked from Windows Update or something?

Well yes, I agree with you on that... it's like moving from 95-98. However, I don't have 64-bit yet and won't have it until at least august or early september. MS is offering the free upgrade until July only so if I order/download my upgrade now, my 32-bit license will become invalid, right?

Too bad they can't set it up so that you could install the Win32Pro with the Win64Pro license if you decide to go back to Win32Pro.

If you make a TrueImage image of your system disk before you upgrade, I wonder if you can reload that image and us it to go back? Hmmmm

You can... but as mentioned... your 32-bit OS license will be invalid so you'd be using the software illegally.

instead of actually going through the process of giving up your license, why cant you just DL the trial version and test out your PC to see if your hardware will work or not.

you have to enter your license number to qualify for the download...this might void the license

Only OEM licenses work.

I asked in the MS newsgroup:
"JRd1st" wrote:

| How do I get to upgrade to Win64Pro?
|

| version isn't really "free" but it costs less than the retail version.

There is no upgrade to 64-bit.....clean install only when
you are able to purchase an OEM 64-bit version of Windows XP.
