Default Weird path and filename when editing files on server

I have several network drives on my desktop, leading to my server. Everytime I create a file on one of those network drives, and I open it in notepad, or tsWebeditor, the path name changes to something like (see attachment). But when I open already edited files, the path and filename is normal. Is this a setting in Windows, or is the Samba server on my FreeBSD server f*cked up?
btw, when I do Save As, I can just browse to the drive and save it, weird.

Default

It looks like it's shortening the filename to 8.3. Never ran into that before. Any ideas why it's happening?
