If Mozilla or Firebird, right click on the link and tick "open link in new tab". It should work.

Then if you are a "keyboard jockey"
go to "edit" -> "preferences". Then in the "category" window (on the left) expand "navigator" (unless it is already expanded) and click "tabbed browsing" and under the heading "open tabs instead of windows" tick the box for "middle-click, control+click or control+enter on links in a web page".See if that suits you.
