Post Jail For SPAM!

This caught my eye yesterday -
"THERE CAN'T BE too many people who would go out of their way to defend spammers and it looks like none of them are in the Virginia government. The state, home to AOL, has enacted anti-spam laws that will have spammers running for the hills.
According to Associated Press, the law is aimed at heavy spammers, many of the provisions only kick in once the sender goes past 10,000 emails. But those provisions are heavy indeed. They include the possibility of seizure of assets and up to five years in prison. "

The Inquirer

About time too I say, although it should have been sorted before we got into the realms of custodial sentences.

What do you all think? Please post your opinions

the worst ones' IMHO are the porno spam

I've had to delete my daughters s/n because of the amount of porno spam getting though > the account was only a week old > think her name was harvested from a chat room because she has limited web access

for every addy I blocked another 2 new ones would appear

they are the ones that need locking up

Grrrrrrrrr

I agree, advertising does have it place, but there it should stay. Porn spam really sux 'cos it's non-discriminate, as the case in point with your daughter's a/c illustrates.
It's ironic that over 90% of all spam is generated by only around 180 sites/users. Approximately 50% of all mail is SPAM, and it has doubled in the llast 6 months.
IMO the SPAM that grates the most is the offers of
SPAM blocking software. "Fed up with junk e-mail? etc"

Talk about the pot calling the kettle black!!
If they didn't send it.........ah well, you get the picture

Cool

Putting people in jail for spamming is just stupid IMO. Send them a hefty fine instead.

jail will just raise tax dollars... fining them with community service would help the community clean up, also *possibly* cleaning up spam.

Instead of fine, make them pay to go to jail.

Well that is a good point. If we send them to jail we have to pay for it, unless they are fined what it costs to put them in jail, but you know that the money would never go to pay for it. But I really hope that they can do something about spam. I have an entire mail account just to deal with spam. I use my "****mail" account for anything I do on the web that requires your email address. I have another account that I use for important things. In that spam account I have at least 150 junk mails per day, and god forbid if you ever try there "remove me for you mailing list" deal. I did it once to like 10 spam emails, then next day I have 1,000+ emails in my inbox!

I agree as well that porn spam is awful and uncalled for. I use Hotmail (why I do is beyond me), and I did a little experiment a while back. I set up a new account as an 11 year old girl, to see if the junk mail was catered to the user profile on Hotmail. I still got the same nasty crap that a 23-year-old male (myself) gets. Why would an 11-year-old girl get this stuff?! Apparently the profile has nothing to do with it, and I am extremely cautious of putting my real address into forms or in plain sight on web pages. Anyone that sends porn spam to a little girl deserves to be put in jail, and so I have no problem with it at all. And I like the idea of them paying for their time in there as well.

Hmm, it seems people have problems with Hotmail. I've had my address for a few years and use it for "crap" when I don't want to use my other addresses. I only get 2-3 spams a week that don't get cought in the spam filter. Sometimes not even that. Am I just lucky?

My other two addresses are completely spam free so far...

Well I don't use a spam filter so I am sure that is part of it, but I really don't think I should have to. Besides most spam filters screw up my job search auto senders.

In an ideal world i'd agree with you. But you know as well as I that you shouldn't really need a firewall nor anti-virus/trojan scanner.....but you do. IMO the originators are a cancer to the W.W.W. Agreed SPAM doesn't pose the same potential threats to PC security, but as has been posted at least once here, SPAM's indescriminate as to who's account it's destined for, thus kids can end up with unsuitable stuff in their inboxes. If ya don't have kids and the you receive few SPAM's then all's good.
It's a shame it interferes with your job searches, but if you add the addresses/domains of the contacts to your SPAM filter as friendly addresses (if possible, if not try message/subject content) then this may be a step to a clean inbox

b4 any forum spammers dive in here. I mean e-mail SPAM

I don't mind spam, even porn spam.
But when the porn spam is too vulgar or to the point of being disgusting, that's when I find it very offensive and a very hefty fine.
