Router problems

Hey
For some odd reason my router (D-Link DI 704P) stopped working this morning. We had a thunder storm the night before but I dont think thats what caused it cause the power light is on.
Anyway, I have 4 computers connected to it but it wont recognize them. For those of you who have the router the M1 light is flashing (dunno what that means).
I checked all the connections and cables but it still wont recognize the computers.

Ive contacted D-Link but they havent answerd yet.

Any ideas?

Thanks

I'm not really familiar with the router, but check both it and your computer NIC's to see if the traffic lights are active or not. This way you can tell if you are atleast getting traffic on the line. Next thing to do would see if they are just sending packets, if that is the case and the recieve light doesn't blink whatsoever, then something is most likely wrong with the router.

Even if it wasn't the storm last night, things just break sometimes...:(

Im 99% sure its the router cause I connected the modem to my computer directly so I can write this thread and send d link a message and as you can see it works. So the NICs are out of the question.

Any ideas?

I have the 704P and one of the M light flash, the other stays on. Don't know which one though (and it's not here). But if it worked before the storm, it could have broken in some peculiar way I guess. Do you have another hub/switch to test with?

just unplug it and wait 30 seconds and replug it back in, might just need to be rebooted to sort the problem,

Tried that about 5 times Iceman.
Unfurtonatly I dont have another router/hub to test.

Anyway, Ive contacted the store that I bought the router from and they might replace it so thats good news.

Ill let you know how it went.

704P here too.
The green "Power" LED is always on, the amber "M1" blinks continuously, and the amber "M2" is always on.

Dunno what could be causing the problem though. It could be just about anything.

If all fails look for a recessed reset button somewhere on the back/underside of the router. If you have such a button it will re-flash the firmware to factory defaults. I had to do this once before but I use a netgear router so dunno if applicable with d-link.

first make sure the mac address is right for the router if u have dynamic ip

Tried the reset button about 100 times at least.
My dad is gonna take it to the shop to see if we can get a replacement tomorrow so Ill keep you updated.

btw, I cant check the MAC addresses, I cant even log into the routers online config page.

Sounds like fried firmware IMHO. Good luck at the vendors man! ;)

I got a replacement but now whenever I try to access the configuration on line I get a blank page with "Busy" at the top left corner.

Anybody know whats that about?

Thanks

OK guys, it works.

I decided to give it one more reset before I go to the shop and kick their a*ses. I tried the page and it took it a loooooong time but it logged into it.

Thanks again

Yeah I get that sometimes. Sometimes it even refuses to display anything at all. I think the firware is "buggy".

*wants D-Link to make new firmware*

OT: Has anyone tried using SNMP with the 704P? I've had mixed experiences, but I can't really get it to work.

I have no idea what that is.

Anyway, the store gave me a different revision of the 704P. The one I had before was the same but the ports on the back were in a different order.

btw, I have firmware v2.70. Which one do u have? This one seems to be pretty good so far.

2.61 build 2

I haven't seen 2.70 outside the american site, which says that I shouldn't use it unless I'm in USA, and I'm not.

Im not in the US either, Im in Israel. So I guess you can try it.

Exactly the sort of thing I don't want to hear before I upgrade firmware... :D

Since it's only SNMP that doesn't work, I think I'll live with it until I know it won't kill my router. :)

I have the 704P also...
The 2.7 firmware is for the Silver Boxed one
The Black box (I have this one) is Firmware 2.57 B3 2/7/2002
This is Revision A

The Silver Boxed one is Revision B
Firmware 2.70 12/24/2002

If your using the Black Box or Revision A don't Flash 2.7 it will toast your Router.

The other possible reason for them not wanting you to update is a language setting/support.
As to Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) you really don't need to use this... seriously why would you? I always make sure it's disabled due to the external network ability to utilize this pathway to your network.

Rev B, the silver one.

The reason I want to use SNMP is to monitor the traffic going through it with MRTG (Multi Router Traffic Grapher) or something like it. I can't get MRTG to work though. Some SNMP programs for Windows work, but they only display info in tables.

How could someone get in through SNMP? Is it even possible to speak SNMP with the router from outside?

Also Hi EP and people. I found this place again while looking through a oooollllllldddd backup. I have filled over 10TB and was looking at my collection of antiques. Any bids on the 500Mhz Win 95 fix?
Any of the SP crew still out there?
