Default Downloaded New Program

OK, I have a new program in my TMP folder in mandrake 9.0.. How do I install it it looks like a TAR file (tz) is this the same as Win Zip file but in Linux... How do I get it extracted and installed... You can see I'm new to Linux but it seems like a great OS, once I learn the in and outs of the system itself...

Thanks for any help rendered...

Jerry

I think he is trying to install that software in linux
you can extract the files with the command
"tar xvf file.tar.gz"
then cd to the directory created "cd file"
and finally configure, compile and install the program
"./configure"
"make"
"make install"

hope this helps

as i can remember there's no winrar in linux (sure it works under wine), but there's a command line unrar, and a lot of gui's for those applications
"tar xvf file.tar.gz" to extract the files
the rest is for install
