Question HP OEM Installed XP

Has anyone ever heard of this? It came from another site and it is totally news to me.

The post read like this:
"I too have an HP computer. I needed to reformat my partitioned C: drive, and bit the bullet, and sent off for the HP Recovery CDs. I formatted C: then attempted to install using the Recovery CDs. They will NOT work with a partitioned drive!!!!! Nothing I tried allowed me to do a reinstall! Calling HP Tech Help just cost me 40 min. worth of waiting on the phone to find out that my drive would be unaccessable unless the recovery program first did a full format, thus wiping out all of my existing partitions. Years worth of programs, pictures, music, data, etc. were now lost. This will be the last HP computer I will buy. Hellova note to have a 120 gig drive, but not be allowed to partition it just in case you ever need to do a recovery!"

I know myself and henyman have HP's - just curious if anyone else that has an HP has partitioned and run into any problems as stated above! I know henyman has done a "destructive fromat" on his in the past - but don't know if his is partitioned or not! I have not done a reformat, repair or install on mine - so I have no experience with it.

Any help (other than HP SUX ) would be appreciated - I already know that!

I know exactly what you mean. My little brother has a HP pc too. And he needed to format his ive 2 and also had only the option to wipe the d: drive with it. The thing he did was that he just installed a normal version of XP

sboulema - okay so I am not the only one thinking along those lines - it just seems like life would be sooooo much easier with a "XP cd" in hand.

I guess my next question would be, since I bought this HP to replace a Compaq (does that make me a two-time loser) running Win 98 - which came with a recovery cd (no OS cd). Thus I do not have any Windows cd - thus could I still get away with purchasing an upgrade? It is my understanding you are asked for a previous Windows cd (proof you are upgrading) when using the "Upgrade cd" - which I obviously do not have!

Any info to help me out??

im viewing this site now on a compaq, so no you are not a loser. I have a compaq which came also with a 98 recovery cd (now running xp). I dont think it will work to only buy an upgrade, since the upgrade will look for a xp cd and not a recovery cd, so it will not be recognised by the upgarde as a M$ disc. Im afraid you need to buy a full version of xp

Somehow I knew you would say I needed the full version of XP - it sure is annoying since I feel HP had to charge me something (in the purchase price) for XP in the first place! I know OEM is cheap for them, but still!

Come to think of it, it's a real "pi$$er" - I got a leagl copy of XP, complete with a legal key, and can't upgrade?? DUH!!

BTW - by two time loser - I guess I misworded what I meant - I was not referring to Compaq. I was referring to having a recovery cd with the Compaq and the "hidden partition" with the HP and still no OS cd - so that makes me a two time loser - I bought 2 different systems and still don't have an OS cd.

Hi Guys,

I don`t know that this will help, but I have just bought a new pc.
It was on special offer at a supermarket. Price: £749.

Pentium4. 2.67Ghz. 120Gb HD. 128mb nvidia graphics, etc, etc

The HD is partioned C: E: D: and each drive is also partioned.

C: = boot 55.8Gb/48.8Gb free space. D: = Backup 46.8Gb/45.0Gb free space. E: = 9.02Gb Recovery/5.97Gb free space.

It is also OEM, but the disks come with it, recovery that is.

It is a German manufacturer, Medion. and so far Great.

So partioning HDs should be compulsory on OEMs with large

drives. That`s just my opinion, for what its worth

I have an HP Pavilion750.uk

I bought on special offer & @ the time it worked out a couple of hundred quid cheaper than building it myself

so with the money I saved I got a copy of XP pro

the preloaded software was dreadful I couldn't wait to FDISK

BTW it took me nearly 6 x months to get round to doing it

Thats strange I have a hp noteboob ze1110. I have to reformat on it often because it is my "mess around computer" I used pm8 on it and when I use my recover disks it asks me recover C or recover the whole harddrive. I'm lucky?

You can get a full OEM version of XP Pro for around $130, once you have the OEM CD you can purchase additional OEM licences for around $80 or $90. Also if you can qualify for academic versions you can get them for less than $100 too.

just a bit of a thought (and trying to use MS's own devices against them). Since they no longer think that we buy software from them, only the right to use it; if we bought a OEM system (hp, compaq, sony etc) with XP installed, we should be able to call up Microsoft and say, "Hey, i've bought a legal liscense, i need a new copy of the software."

At least I think we should pressure them about this since it only seems logical to me.

Also, I've never tried it, but say you borrowed a friends XP cd, could you install it on your machine and use the old OEM key?

I didn't waste time with the likes of HP and Compaq. Nor Dell or Gateway. My first and only new PC, a Pentium III 500Mhz that I bought like 4 1/2 years ago, I built myself. Building a PC is much less expensive and you get to choose what you get down to the motherboard, and you don't get the OEM crap. Buying from Dell at that time would have cost like $4000. Canadian money, too. But building it it cost like $2000. Windows 98 obviously.
