Default Spyware...

ok i use ad aware and everything to find and get rid of spyware but lately ive been getting alot of random popups, even when sitting idle, and some of them pornographic. i checked the list of all programs running on my computer and didnt find anything out of the ordinary, but i know there's something sitting on this comp. generating popups because its the same exact ones no matter where i am on the internet, or if im even surfing. do you know of any other good spyware cleaning programs? i thought ad aware pretty much was the best...

also...ive been getting a message that there is a virus on my computer. it might have to do with that. i use AVG anti virus by grisoft and for the most part for a free anti virus program its nicely featured. but it will tell me it has detected a virus and to run avg to remove it, but everytime i scan it finds nothing...

thanks for the help.

For the pop-ups, disable your "messaging" service in your Services list.

For the virus thingy, if you haven't updated your definitions, that might help to find it while scanning, but if you have... I have no clue.

Good luck!

update the virus definitions, as hercales tells, then do an online virus scan, if avg still doesn't find it.

there are actually virus warnings, before the virus might load, so that might be what's ahppening

sorry, avg has found more viruses then norton on both my box, and my dads

I would pay more for avg, if these two viruses both competed with price

Try some free online scans. There's Panda http://www.pandasoftware.com/actives..._principal.htm , and Trend http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ . Always nice to get a second opinion.

thanks for the tips. how do i get to my messenger list? and as for the virus, i think you are right about the warning thing, i think it has to do with that. cause as soon as i downloaded the file that contained the virus a message popped up warning me about it. so i immediately deleted the file. but then shortly after i got messages warning me about the same virus again but this time the path indicated wasnt wherer the file was before but in my registry i think...so, im hoping since i deleted the main file before even running it its not affecting my computer

To disable the messenger service goto control panel- Administrative tools- services then just look for the messenger service and disable it.

Do you use "heuristics" in AVG? If you do, read up on heuristics in the help menu and online at www.grisoft.com . Heuristics is an agressive (sometimes too agressive) probablistic visus scanning method. It might pick up some thing for a virus that is not. But better safe than sorry.

I have used NAV for 5 years, then changed to AVG because it is faster, less intrusive, and detected more viruses than NAV.

Good luck, EJ
