I have a domain registered, but I want to host the site, I have a cable connection. The site wont be popular at all, this is just somthing I want to expirement with..

I have windows 2000 server, (should I get adv server?), and want to use IIS for the website, but how would i get it so external users can see this also?

thank you for your help!

2000 server should be more than enough, the only big diff between is processor support (number of) and memory support (amount of)
set up server on a static address if to be always up..... setup website on server then well all ready contact who is hosting your domain name and have them point it to your ip address in their dns servers

its acutally pretty easy to host your own site. you will need a win2k server or a linux server. don't need advanced server. the only challanging part will be in properly securing IIS. if its not properly set up it will be a MAJOR security hole. if you have a router try forwarding a port, like 8080 to the IIS server. once you have all the server stuff set up, just build the site.

hope this helps
oDin.

what are the specs of the machine running the IIS server??

the specs are PIII 500, 256MB of ram.

i have IIS setup so ppl on my lan can see it, now i want external people to be able to.... thanks for the help!

when you registered your domain name you had to specify and ip. if you can go back and change it to ip:port number....eg 127.0.0.1:8080. on your router forward all traffic on port 8080 to the machine runnin IIS.

Why use port 8080?? Why not just use port 80 like you should?

jkoXP: Make suer your ISP allows you to point a domain at your IP. Most ISP:s won't allow this.

just used it as an example. that's how i have mine set up. also, if you forward all traffic on port 80 to the machine running IIS then the other machines won't be able to surf the net cuz all incomming data on that port with go to IIS machine.

That's not true. Returning data doesn't come on port 80. I have a setup like this only port 80 is forwarded to my Linux server. I have no problems surfing.

Zedric is correct. When you surf the net you do not recieve the pages back on port 80. You will recieve then info back on ports greater than 1024. Port 80 is the port assigned by IANA for HTTP servers. This is just for serving out pages.

Since you are on a cable connection you more than likely have a dynamic IP. Since your IP will be changing you need to be able to have your DNS monitor this so it will update to match your IP with your domain name. There are many services that offer dynamic DNS.

Here are a couple:

Also Hi EP and people. I found this place again while looking through a oooollllllldddd backup. I have filled over 10TB and was looking at my collection of antiques. Any bids on the 500Mhz Win 95 fix?
Any of the SP crew still out there?
