in IE, tools - internet options - programs - tick the box that say's IE should check wether it is the default browser.
Start IE, it should ask you if you want it to be the default |

On the same page you should also see a box preceded by email: make sure that says outlook express.

Looks like whatever the browser was that you removed took other files with it. Try reinstalling it. If it works just set what you want as default & leave the browser on your system till the next format.

ok im getting POed. i tried the site you gave me, and thanks for giving it to me xsivforce i appreciate it. but i followed it, went into regedit to change the values of IE to uninstall it, rebooted. so far so good, windows said that IE had been uninstalled. then i ran the install program for IE 6 and it installed it, rebooted and im still having the same problem. i certainly dont want to format over this, and im a long way from needing to format so i guess ill just have to deal with the inconvenience if i dont find a solution. oh, and i also couldn't do the first part that webpage instructed on trying, running that scannow thing to check for windows components because i had xp preinstalled on my computer when i bought it and don't have an actual xp disc so i couldnt put in a disc when it prompted me too.

If you dont have an actual XP disc you should have the CAB files somewhere on your hard drive

yeah, I was gonna suggest that Hipster, re-install the other browser, see if IE etc works ok, then uninstall other one but leave those "possibly shared files", the "other programs may be affected" ones, on the system during uninstall, or just leave the whole thing on there.
