Unhappy XP and program installation

I have recently done a clean install of XP Professional. Everything went to plan so I believed. The HDD formatted as NTFS. When I try and install some software, I find that the installation will not progress past the PC finding the CD. No installation program commences etc. The latest I tried to install was Quicken (new version). I can read the disk through explorer but the installation will not run. When I look at the file (install) it indicates a 16bit file. Would this be the problem?
Has any one had this problem or an idea how to rectify.
I have a little knowledge but am stumped on how to fix it other than reformatting at fat32.
Regards
Dave

In some instances you have the option to run a programme in "Compatability Mode". The way you do this is to right click on the app (in your case it would be the setup programme) and select 'Properties', in this dialog select 'Compatabitlity' and here you have the option to run it in 95 / 98 / Me compatability mode.
Hope this helps.
