How do I get avg to stop popping up advertising on my desktop? Is there anything that I can use instead of AVG? Something that just works without stupid, flippin' popups. Thanks Heeter |

Antivir
It has a popup too but it can be disabled. You can also disable the splash screen if you want to. |

I'd go avast, you can make it completely silent, even for updates. Just do a minimal install.

Avast's detection is not as good as Antivir. It may seem sometimes like it is doing good but Avast has a lot of false positives.
Most sites that deal with free software recommend Antivir over Advast. One example is at Gizmo's In case you think I am bias toward Antivir I will let you know I use Kaspersky Anti-virus. Here is a recent head to head and the conclusion:

I am sticking with Antivir, working good, and I checked as well, antivir has really good ratings, I found. Thanks, AZ Heeter |

AntiVir does have a nice detection rate, but also a lot of false positives. The dialog that appears during auto updates is annoying as hell though.
http://www.av-comparatives.org/compa...ews/main-tests 99.7 for AntiVir, but it has that annoying popup during updates and lots of false positives, or... 98.2 for avast, which can run completely silent for updates and more, has better scanning methods and nowhere near the high amount of false positives. Plus, do a minimal install and have no skins. Based on Gizmo's link,
Not just that, but that head to head is from a website I and other techs haven't heard a thing of and isn't as trustworthy as av comparatives. In fact, that website looks like it was pretty one sided for AntiVir. AntiVir is good, but it's not as user friendly as some might think. |

AV Comparitives is still rating NOD32 and Kaspersky as better tools due to far fewer false postitives compared to AntiVir and Avast
![]() If you're in the UK I can get you NOD32 licenses

I've always heard good things about NOD32, but I gave up using AVs years ago.
