Default [Office 2007] Tips and Tricks

We don't appear to have any stickied threads on how-to's and tips and tricks regarding the most widely used office application out there

Figured this would be a good place to start. Please post some useful tips and tricks for all users. If you want to talk about a competing product, start another thread

My first tip is pretty simple. If you are using Office 2007 applications such as Word, PowerPoint, Excel and others, instead of clicking on the different ribbon tabs to open them, simply move your pointer onto the ribbon that has current focus and scroll using your mouse wheel. It will automatically cycle through the ribbons and is more accurate and faster than clicking individual tabs.

or if you want the classic menus back and don't want the ribbon interface, you can use the Classic Menu Add-in For Office 2007

The ribbons are far more effective for productivity once you get over the learning curve though Fitz

Going back to the classic is like taking a brand new, super-charged super-car and sticking an old-school carburetor engine in it.

But, nice link for those who want to enjoy the old-school feel

Is it per-program specific? Would be cool to ease people into it like give them classic for 3 out of the 4 or whatever instead of a "shock and awe"

Yes, you can enable or disable it separately for Access, Excel, Outlook, Power Point and Word. Each one individually has some other options. You can choose to hide some or all of the Microsoft tabs, or none of course.

Notice, Outlook itself doesn't have ribbons, but it's stripped down version of Word that's built-in does and that's what the Outlook setting affects.

I switch back and forth between menus and the standard ribbons (menus are just on a new tab that Classic Menu adds) depending on what I'm doing. I'm an old fart, so I can't learn any new tricks.

I've been using it for over a year.

Outlook Key which can be bought separately or as part of Passware Kit. Neither is particularly cheap, but compared to the full Passware Kit, Outlook Key is "reasonable" if your PST is that important.

I haven't used the Outlook portion of this. I've only used Passware Kit to reset the Admin account password on Windows XP once. They do have demos of both products to download. Don't know if the demo will permanantly give you access to your stuff or what it's trial limitations are.

The demo of Outlook key is only 521.1 KB!

Not sure I follow.

Is this your file that you have already set a password on?

If so, can you not just log back in and change the password?

To open the .pst file, you must enter the correct password. Remember that .pst passwords are case-sensitive. Try to remember whether the password that you assigned used uppercase and lowercase letters and make sure that your CAPS LOCK key is not on.

Passwords cannot be reset or recovered if lost. Microsoft is not able to retrieve lost .pst passwords.
That being said, there are other ways to crack or reset the password on the pst. Depending on what version of Outlook you are running, if you have a non-unicode PST (ie: created prior to Outlook 2003) you can use a couple Microsoft utilities that have the side effect of removing the password from the PST file..

When you try to load the PST in Outlook it would ask for a password if one's been set.

Everyone,

I have followed this guide to make a very handy Email Template toolbar. I was wondering if there was a way in to create an applet or something that when I select a specific email it prompts me for specific information (eg. DATE, name, system)?
Any hints on how I could go about doing this?

I am not sure I follow.

Are you looking for search functionality? Are you looking to manually change the information on the email? What are you needing to do good sir

Sounds like Eagle710 wants it to prompt him for the answers to various fields as specified in his email templates. I don't know the answer to his question, however.

My experience with related solutions is limited to advanced "mail merge" (I don't know if they call it that any more, or if they ever called it that under Windows applications) using Excel and Word.

I wish I could but I don't use templates at all and have no idea what to suggest first. Of course, you were probably asking if anyone else has any guidance.
