Google IM tomorrow: more definite
Posted by NetRyder on the 23rd August 2005 at 6:46pm 12 comments

The rumors are solidifying, and the L.A. Times this morning is running a piece that states categorically (citing unnamed sources) that Google will launch an instant message service, possibly as early as tomorrow (which John Markoff of the NY Times hinted at). The L.A. Times piece asserts that Google’s chat service will have a voice element, similar to Skype. A pure VoIP product? I imagine Google will incorporate some information retrieval angle to the interface, and that whatever IM/chat/VoIP product is brewing won’t be completely unrelated to search or "organizing the world's knowledge." Between Google Desktop 2 and this thing, Google is making this an unusually interesting August.

:gasp:

Google is trying to take over everything, and the fanboys happily support them. Smilie

:gasp:

I don't get this whole "trying to take over everything" concept. It's not like any company forces you to use their products.

Its all the same people that think everything is a conspiracy Smilie

I wonder how long it'll be before someone makes a hack to block the ads in their IM.

I wonder what sources the L.A. Times used? This summary sounds almost the same as /. and every place else since the rumor began ages ago. I guess it will be interesting to see if this does materialize tomorrow or not.

People on Neowin are reporting that they can actually connect to talk.google.com using a Jabber client and their Google account.

yah say thas on neowin yesterday. could be intresting

Well, let's see. I install the latest Google Desktop, and it proceeds to stop loading AIM, YSN and MSN. Yeah, I bet they are ready to roll out an IM client.
