Slashdot has reported on the internet's two largest BitTorrent site's demise. I've known about TorrentBits closing for a while now, but it also seems that, the more well known, SuprNova has now had to follow suit and close the doors on their web-site for good.
With previous reports estimating BitTorrent to account for 35% of all internet traffic, it was only a matter of time before site's hosting torrents for copyrighted material (even though disclaimed against the illegal use of said torrents) would attract attention from law enforcement and copyright holders.
Slashdot:
Numerous people wrote in with similar stories: "Without providing a reason, both of these sites have shut down: SuprNova.org and TorrentBits.org." We mentioned a few days ago that the MPAA was going after Bittorrent sites.
Over the recent months, suprnova had been receiving upwards of three and a half million hits per day (3,500,000), which is more than even slashdot itself averages (estimated 3m/day) showing the site was indeed, extremely popular. It almost makes you feel sorry for whatever site all of suprnova's visitors decide to use next.
The two site's have each now posted their departing words:
TorrentBits:
Good-bye
Thanks to all users, uploaders, mods and donors for helping create the best torrent site on the net, but this is where the road ends for us.
SuprNova:
Greetings everybody,
As you have probably noticed, we have often had downtimes. This was because it was so hard to keep this site up!
But now we are sorry to inform you all, that SuprNova is closing down for good in the way that we all know it.
We do not know if SuprNova is going to return, but it is certainly not going to be hosting any more torrent links.
We are very sorry for this, but there was no other way, we have tried everything.
Thank you all that helped us, by donating mirrors or something else, by uploading and seeding files, by helping people out on IRC and on forum, by spreading the word about SuprNova.org.
It is a sad day for all of us!
Please visit SuprNova.org every once in a while to get the latest news on what is happening and if there is anything new to report on.
As we wish to maintain the nice comunity that we created, we are keppig forums and irc servers open.
Thank you all and Goodbye!
sloncek & the rest of the SuprNova Team
With the two largest site's now gone, and many smaller trackers dissapearing from the internet each day, it seems the MPAA and RIAA are getting their own way, however will this put a stop to BitTorrent? will it simply carry on, just in a more underground manner, or will everyone simply most on to a new P2P just as we did when BitTorrent first arrived? Only time will tell.
