Suprnova and TorrentBits go dark
Posted by SPeedY_B on the 19th December 2004 at 6:17pm 32 comments

Slashdot has reported on the internet's two largest BitTorrent site's demise. I've known about TorrentBits closing for a while now, but it also seems that, the more well known, SuprNova has now had to follow suit and close the doors on their web-site for good.

With previous reports estimating BitTorrent to account for 35% of all internet traffic, it was only a matter of time before site's hosting torrents for copyrighted material (even though disclaimed against the illegal use of said torrents) would attract attention from law enforcement and copyright holders.

Slashdot:
Numerous people wrote in with similar stories: "Without providing a reason, both of these sites have shut down: SuprNova.org and TorrentBits.org." We mentioned a few days ago that the MPAA was going after Bittorrent sites.

Over the recent months, suprnova had been receiving upwards of three and a half million hits per day (3,500,000), which is more than even slashdot itself averages (estimated 3m/day) showing the site was indeed, extremely popular. It almost makes you feel sorry for whatever site all of suprnova's visitors decide to use next.

The two site's have each now posted their departing words:

TorrentBits:
Good-bye

Thanks to all users, uploaders, mods and donors for helping create the best torrent site on the net, but this is where the road ends for us.

SuprNova:
Greetings everybody,

As you have probably noticed, we have often had downtimes. This was because it was so hard to keep this site up!
But now we are sorry to inform you all, that SuprNova is closing down for good in the way that we all know it.
We do not know if SuprNova is going to return, but it is certainly not going to be hosting any more torrent links.
We are very sorry for this, but there was no other way, we have tried everything.

Thank you all that helped us, by donating mirrors or something else, by uploading and seeding files, by helping people out on IRC and on forum, by spreading the word about SuprNova.org.
It is a sad day for all of us!

Please visit SuprNova.org every once in a while to get the latest news on what is happening and if there is anything new to report on.

As we wish to maintain the nice comunity that we created, we are keppig forums and irc servers open.

Thank you all and Goodbye!
sloncek & the rest of the SuprNova Team

With the two largest site's now gone, and many smaller trackers dissapearing from the internet each day, it seems the MPAA and RIAA are getting their own way, however will this put a stop to BitTorrent? will it simply carry on, just in a more underground manner, or will everyone simply most on to a new P2P just as we did when BitTorrent first arrived? Only time will tell.

Had to happen I guess.

My view is this will force things more towards IRC and newgroups, and in the directions of "hostless" P2P ....

Lets wait and see

IRC and NewsGroups are always active though, these p2p apps just make file sharing more widespread and publically available. I'm holding out to see how Suprnova's Exeem application turns out, if it delivers everything it promises, it should be a damned fine app.

Don't tell the masses! Then it will sux : (

Keep in mind that there are plenty of mirrors (removed) that will keep suprnova's enormous collection of torrents alive.

Please don't post links to mirrors, thanks - SPeedY_B

Suprnova.com has and always will be a scam. The REAL site was .org, go there and you shall see the mesage stating they're closing as posted above.

It is a VERY sad day online today.

And here I just started looking at torrents. Oh well. A day late and a dollar short. Smilie

There are many other free sites to choose from.

Yep it sure is!

There are many other torrent sites out there, however I wouldn't recommend posting about them, nor encouraging people to PM you for details.

Damn, didn't see this coming. :wow:

using IRC was around before the Napster craze and will be around after all the other crazes and phases that will be around

You think this is a way to get people to pay for torrents like was done with Napster?

no...this was really an easy win for intellectual property owners...they just found the servers and closed them down...when things are centralized they are easily killed off

expect the unexpected !

kill all the people working for mpaa

A sad day.

Suprnova isn't really dead. The suprnova.org domain was just a shell redirect to one of many mirrors that go up all the time, which are still very much alive. You just gotta know where to find em.

Yes, the mirrors are still up, a quick search via google reveals that, however the mirrors will receive no new files and most of the trackers used by the existing torrents are shutting down.

apparently TB 2 is just around the corner Smilie

It's not (I know from a reliable source) there is a new domain for "tb2", but it's NOT associated with TorrentBits, it's not created by RedBeard, and it will likely either be attacked, or taken down as the real TB was.

There are far too many rumours surrounding these sites at the moment, there are a few I know to be true, and many I have heard which have no real basis or evidence. All I will say is both site's will return (this can still change) however they shall be absolutely nothing at all like they were previously. Beleive NOTHING unless you see it on the actual site itself.

Thats soooo gay...im sad...so sad...

it's not created by redbeard no, he quit because helshad left and a few other friends, but in the 'tb2' irc chan there are a lot of the old members from tb; defection, maxthepuppy, w0kk3l, fractal, fury420 and others, and the site is being tested now, there's screenshots of it in the forum (real or not remains to be seen). there'll be a max user limit of 25000 to start with, they were talking about the possibilty of having it invite only...oh well, we'll see what happens.

there's over 900 people in the tb2 channel. However the main uploaders from the real TB aren't taking part in the new site, so it may well be a new community, but it will lack (0-day) content which is what made TB what it was. Not to mention the tb2 server is in America.. wouldn't really like to say how long that will last.

A sad day with the loss of suprnova and torrentbits. To all at these sites i would just like to say a big thank you for a really great job.YOU WILL BE MISSED
