Xp desktop problem

I dunno how but in my friends computer the desktop disappared.
I went to c:\documents & setting\ (user name)\desktop and all is there.

I check out for running programs. nothing
i check out something in the display properties. nothing.

and he cannot see any icon on desktop although in his user folder there are a lot of shortcuts .

anyone ?

Already tried rightclick desktop > Arrange Icons by... > Show Desktop Icons ?
