Most problems with USB adapters can be traced back to the software used to install them. Uninstall everything that has to do with the Netgear adapter. Take the adapter out of the computer. Use the CD to install the drivers. This is to prevent you from installing Netgear's software for connecting which is causing Windows to 'fart'.
Now shut down the computer.Install the adapter. Start back up - let Windows find the drivers - and let Windows manage the connection.
