Sorry to raise the problems with Windows Update yet again. My own computer is up to date with the updates. However, my neighbour has been trying to update the Critical Updates for XP. They appear to download OK, but fail to install. Is there a problem with the Update Site?

    Nope the site is fine.

Could you get Windows Update.log (in the windows directory) and examine it for error codes, that will help track down the exact reason why it is not installing the patch.

you can try bigfix instead of the windowsupdate site and See if this is the problem>

    Windows Update - Error

If you cannot update XP check your c:\windows\windows update.log.
If you have this error: Error 0x800C0008 then go to Tools\internet options\languages.
You must have one language selected. Boom windows update works again!

    Or for LAN settings

Go to control panel, open up Internet Options\Connections.
Click on the Lan Settings button at the bottom right of the window.
    Untick Automatically detect settings.

Its not 0x800C0008, the patches are downloading therefore the site is accessable.

Everyone rates this bigfix thing, think im going to have to take a look and critique it.

Maybe somone has a dodgy copy of XP?

Kind of what you wrote is near the same as an article in help me section of a puter mag. The person had bought a second user PC from a boot fair and been sold a puter and a back up copy of XP disk.

    Maybe it's a dodgy copy.

If its a licence issue windows update tells you so and does not let you download anything :)

Just going on what I read dude.

Never had pirate wares myself, from what the user wrote it seemed like I was reading what the person wrote in net user mag.
