Windows Messenger Problem

I have got Windows Messenger verision 4.7 with .NET framework (english) version 1.0.3705 installed on me pc, and everytime I use messenger, it hangs every 5 seconds, and spikes me cpu usage to 99% so everything hangs for like 2- 5 seconds, it is really ****ting me off because i cant fix it, and i dont want to d/l msn v5.0 because last time I did that I got hacked.
Can you PLEASE HELP

Don't forget about good ol' Trillian. Nice prog when you get fed up with Windows Messenger.

yeah I have just started using trillian and its not bad, once you manage to edit out the annoyin bits. Also if you go to Deviant Art and look under Application Skins you will find MSN Messenger, get one of those and you will get a slightly older MSN version, never know it might fix you up
