It looks like your running XP w/ SP1 ?? Can you try reinstalling SP1 ? It might be a memory issue, whether it is system RAM or a video card, Id start looking there first.

Sounds like maybe explorer got corrupted somehow ... try doing "sfc /scannow" from the command line. It'll compare all your system files to see if any are damaged and if indeed explorer is corrupted fix it :)

Oooh I'll have to keep that one myself, that sounds pretty handy, does it have correction capability, or is it simply a file checker ??

It'll go thru checking files and if it finds something it prompts for your XP cd. You can get the rest of the options by doing "sfc /help".

I attempted both of those suggestions.

Unfortunately, neither of them work. I did manage to get my default options back to "list" rather than "thumbnails." At least now, I'll only crash if i view thumbnails on purpose :)

    Any other ideas?

My guess is you went and installed codecs galore and now you have a corrupted codec that crashes when explorer generates thumbnails. try disabling thumbnails. Just install codecs you need. try hotfix Q329692

I know this one's a bit old now, but I had this problem and it came top of Google, so I thought I'd post the solution I found.

The problem seemed to be caused by the ffdshow video codec I had installed.
All I did was change the preference for MJPEG decoding from "Libavcodec" to "Disabled" and this fixed the problem.

Hope this helps anyone else suffering this dilemma.

i had a similar problem but the codec came from the klite codec pack and it was the mp3 codec. I would open the folder and boom explorer crashed. Narrowing it down to 1 codec proved time consuming. But all better now.
