shouldn't matter as long as its same XP version as you have ... doesn't check codes or anything ... just files :)

does it ask for XP or SP1 disc? sometimes it wants a SP1 disc in which case you need to make one. :(

Could be the Gran's CD has SP1 on it.

Or you could have the XP Corp Verison on the machine.

Or you could have XP Pro and Gran had XP Corp.

Or one could be XP Home.

    Plan A -
Try it with your original XP CD. You may get lucky and the scartches won't be in a critical data area.

    Plan B -
Figure out what is really on your comp and find someone with the same CD version and have them bring it over to try the repair.

    Plan C -
Make backups of everything. CD blanks are only 10 cents in bulk.

Just give the local microsoft distributor in your country the closest one a call.
Explain your cd got rubbished, say the dog ate it or something if you must now listen don't take NO for an answer ask them to replace the CD, cost about £10 + P&P.
