I have done this and it seemed to work pretty well. At least for a week or two. I wound up doing a clean install about 3 weeks later.
If you have to do a clean install make a partition on you HDD just for the O.S.. I have a 10 Gig partition that only has XP on it and the rest of my files are on another partition. Now if I have to do a clean install for XP I do not loose the other files and can retrieve them after the new install.. Works for me.....
