I have a new Sony Notebook GR390 with the following:

    PIII 1.2M
    512M DRAM
    ATI Mobility Radeon
    30G HD
    Integrated 10/100 Ethernet

I received a stop error message when I turned on my machine:

"A problem has been detected & windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer...

    Technical Information: *** Stop: 0x000000ED (0x81F94900,0xC000009C,0x00000000, 0x0000000)"

I can't boot to Safe Mode. In fact, I cannot boot to any option after hitting F8. I want to save my data as opposed to using the System Restore CDs. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I am not sure what your problem is. The thing I would do is to go to Technet and search for your specific Stop error message. You will probably find an answer to your problem.
Sorry I can't be of more help to you :(

i've had a few of those, all i can tell you is bad news, i had to reformat entirely, never quite understood what the problem was too. if you have a windows original cd (xp) i think you can load a recovery consoul and backup from there.

install xp as a repair installation. it sould ask you when you pop the cd in (from boot)

First thing you should do is to boot to the recovery console and run chkdsk /r
