is there any way to place useful info about your system on the desktop, or on the taskbar somewhere? im talking about CPU speed, temp, usage, drive usage, mem usage, etc. are there programs you can get to do this?

thx in advance

Try doing a forum search for them. There are programs all over the place for this but I don't use them.

I use coolmon combined with motherboard monitor (mbm) and it works really well. There are a fair few out there as hipster said, but both of these are popular and well supported.

Coolmon
Motherboard Monitor

Depending on what mobo you have installed they generally have a system monitoring program on the cd.
I have also used motherboard monitor.
BTW the temps(especially) and the voltages (sometimes) seem alot different than what is reported thru these programs: i.e. temps much lower; verses what is stated in the bios moniter

MBM5 sits on the taskbar and you can config it to display various readings, mine has CPU temp until i mouse over, then i see fan speeds etc.

Also Hi EP and people. I found this place again while looking through a oooollllllldddd backup. I have filled over 10TB and was looking at my collection of antiques. Any bids on the 500Mhz Win 95 fix?
Any of the SP crew still out there?
