temp in xp

I notice that there is a temp dir in the windows dir of xp. and i found that it contains dir like _ISTMP2.dir and it contains old application that i am unable to uninstall. what are this files and can i delete them. and also what will happen if i delete them.

I delete the temp files and I've never had a problem. If you have programs that you can't uninstall, or progs that you deleted but still show up in Add/Remove, then get a registry cleaner and that will take care of getting rid of whatever is left.
