made a sp-1 xp cd, installed from the "D:" drive, then change the letter to Y: to help partitioning the free space. Now SFC keeps asking for the cd but can not find it. Anyone know how to direct it to y: ????

Go to the following path with the Registry editor:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup

There you'll find a string called 'SourcePath' with a value of, in your case 'D:\'. Change this value to 'Y:\' and restart the computer (all modifications made with the Registry Editor are automatically saved). That should do the trick.
